BCCI DREAM TEAM: SO8URAV GANGULY MISSED OUT

BCCI asked fans to vote for their Test dream team with the XI revealed on the final day of the first Test against New Zealand

In a poll run by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to pick an all-time XI for Tests on the milestone moment of 500 Tests in Kanpur, name of one of the best captains and a brilliant opening batsman in Sourav Ganguly was a big miss.

With the team decided based on fan votes, Ganguly was a major omission despite scoring 7,212 runs in the longest format of the game and playing over a 100 Tests (113) with 16 hundreds and 35 fifties coming to his name at an average of 42.17. He also picked up 32 wickets to add to his numbers.

Ganguly’s highest Test score of 239 came against Pakistan when the arch-rivals visited India in 2007-08 with the current Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) chief scoring the double hundred at Bangalore which is still the highest score by an Indian left hander.

However, bizarrely, Yuvraj Singh’s name is included in the list given the flashy leftie has played only 40 Tests and has 1900 runs to his name at an average of 33.92. ‘Yuvi’ who is more proficient in the limited overs format of the game has over 8300 runs in ODIs and over 1100 runs in T20s while being a handy option with the ball too picking up 139 wickets in both the formats of the game.

Incidentally, the entire XI comprises of right hand batsmen with only Yuvi – the 12th man – the leftie in the team.

The entire team reads: Sunil Gavaskar, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Kapil Dev, MS Dhoni, Ravichandran Ashwin, Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath, Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj Singh (12th man).

Asanas to cure Diabetes Baba Ramdev Yoga Patanjali Yogpeeth Yatra

DIABETES: CONTROL
& CURE
Plant-based diets (especially whole foods) may successfully prevent, treat, and even reverse type 2 diabetes including in children.
Excluding meat, milk, and other animal products and high
fat
and high protein foods may reduce the risk of diabetes
and gestational diabetes by boosting our hormone-binding proteins, helping to prevent obesity, and
reducing exposure to arsenic,BPA, dioxins, nitrites, and PCBs.
Eggs may
be particularly risky – eating only one egg a week may almost double
the odds of getting diabetes
. Fish,
especially salmon, is one of the primary sources of PCBs and other industrial toxins, which
may play a role in the development of diabetes.
Indian gooseberries (amla), coffee, soy, flaxseeds, green tea, pulses (dried beans), chamomile tea, purple potatoes, broccoli sprouts, whole grains, vinegar, and beans may be protective. Beans may be
especially beneficial when replacing meat or refined carbs, such as white rice. Cinnamon, depending on the
variety, it may be either too toxic for consumption at high doses or
ineffective at treating diabetes. Diabetes
drugs
, on the other hand, have been found to increase the risks of heart
attack, heart failure, and death, and regular
exercise
and weight-loss may work just as well against
diabetes. Erythritol is a nontoxic sugar substitute. By
eating plant-based and living
a healthy lifestyle
, 90%-95% of type 2 diabetes is avoidable. Lifestyle medicine
can work so well that it may even be able to reverse
diabetic retinopathy
. If left untreated, diabetes can cause blindness. Untreated type 1
diabetes can even be fatal. Babies fed baby formula seemed to have a higher risk of
obesity, type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Yoga for diabetes : 4 yoga poses (ASANs
:
আসন)
Follow these simple
pranayams and asanas to control blood glucose levels

Study after study at top Western universities confirm and reiterate what our
ancient science has been preaching all along -that positive health effects of
yoga are bountiful.

For one, yoga stimulates the organs which in turn improves metabolic
activities. This means that the chemical transformations within a cell are
carried out more efficiently. This makes it a highly beneficial exercise for
those suffering from diabetes -a complex condition which occurs due to lack of
insulin production by the pancreas or lack of cell response to insulin,
resulting in a multitude of metabolic imbalances involving the regulation and
utilisation of insulin and glucose (sugar) in the body.

In fact, a study published in the journal, Evidence-Based Complementary and
Alternative Medicine, last year analysed available research looking at yoga's
influence on diabetes and complications of diabetes (for instance, kidney
problems and high blood pressure) and found that regular yoga practise led to
shortterm improvements in fasting glucose and cholesterol levels. The research,
conducted by Marshall Govindan and Dr Emilia RipollBunn, also found that the
direct stim ulation of the pancreas by certain postures rejuvenated its
capacity to produce insulin.

Yoga practitioner Sabir Shaikh adds, "A few asanas help balance the
functioning of the endocrine system. It massages and tones the abdominal organs
like pancreas and liver, stimulate the nervous and circulatory system which in
turn helps in controlling diabetes."

Diabetologist Dr Pradeep Gadge concurs. "Besides medication", he
says, "Yogic asanas help in harmonising the body, breath and mind, thereby
contributing to the overall health of the individual. Asanas help in optimal
secretions of the endocranial glands which helps insulin in the body to be used
more effectively."

Studies have also confirmed that practising certain asanas such as Ardha
Matsyendrasana (half-twist pose) combined with Dhanurasana (bow pose),
Vakrasana (twisted pose), Matsyendrasana (half-spinal twist), Halasana (plough
pose) squeezes and compresses the abdomen and helps stimulate the pancreatic
secretions or hormonal secretions. As a result, more insulin is pushed into the
system. This rejuvenates the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas of
diabetics suffering from both type 1 and 2. Practising the postures in a
relaxed manner, without exertion, meditation and breathing techniques help most
patients control the triggers or causes of diabetes.

Asanas over high-intensity workout

A study, by S A Ramaiah in Washington, compared the effects of exercise such as
walking, jogging on a treadmill, static cycling with asanas such as Upavishta
Bakasana (sitting crane), Bakasana (standing crane) and Dhanurasana. It was
found that these asanas were the most effective as they helped stimulate the
hormonal secretion of the pancreas and rejuvenate its capacity to produce
insulin. They also strengthened the back muscles which enhance toning of
abdominal viscera (muscles and internal organs). The balancing in Bakasana
improves interaction between the pituitary gland and pancreas.

Breath of life

Aside from asanas, breathing exercises especially anulom vilom (alternate
nostril breathing) and kapalbatti (one-time inhale; exhale 30 to 50 times
quickly) is extremely beneficial.Anulom vilom is found useful in diabetes as
alternate nostril breathing has calming effects on the nervous system,
facilitating homeostasis (internal equilibrium in the function of all the
systems). This manages the stress levels, helping in diabetes treatment.

Kapalbhatti, on the other hand, stimulates the pancreas to release insulin,
thus helping control diabetes. Pranayam makes the mind calm, thus balancing the
interaction between the pituitary gland and the pancreas. Kapalabhati combined
with Nauli Kriya (pressure manipulations and isolation of abdominal-recti
muscles) help control blood sugar. These practices balance the Basic Metabolic
Rate (BMR) which in turn helps stabilise sugar levels.

"Once you are through with the practice, relax in shavasana (lying flat on
the ground) to cool off," advises Shaikh. "A yogic diet that is high
in fibre, whole grains, legumes and vegetables complements the regimen. It is
recommended to lose excess weight and stabilise blood sugar levels."

Bear in mind

Throughout the programme, monitor glucose levels under the supervision of a
physician, and take appropriate medication as prescribed.

-Practise yoga in the morning and evening for 40 to 60 minutes with the
recommended series of postures according to one's capacity.

-The maintenance period of postures should be increased gradually from five
seconds to a minute, or even longer, depending on the posture and capacity of
the person.

-Always focus on breathing during the maintenance period of the posture.

Tried and tested

When 38-year-old Manish Chaturvedi was diagnosed with case of borderline
diabetes (medically termed as pre-diabetes), a condition characterised by the
presence of blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not high enough
to be classified as diabetes, he was advised by his doctor to take up yoga.

If undiagnosed or untreated, pre-diabetes can develop into type 2 diabetes.
Chaturvedi, a healthcare professional was also asked to change his sedentary
lifestyle. "My mother is diabetic. When she introduced yoga in her
routine, it helped control her sugar levels," he says.

Chaturvedi began with yoga and pranayam Chaturvedi began with yoga and pranaya
after his sugar hit a high. "I practised pranayam, which included anulom
vilom, kapalbatti, mandukasan and ardha chakrasana (in pic) for 30 minutes
every day."

After three months of regular practise, Chaturvedi found that his practise,
Chaturvedi found that his sugar levels were returned to the normal margin.

Follow these four key yoga postures

Vrikshasana

Benefit:

Helps stimulate the hormonal secretion of the pancreas.

Method

-Stand straight and keep your feet close to each other. Your knees, legs and
hand should be held straight.

-Now bring your right foot and keep it on your left thigh. Try to make a right
angle. If you are unable to keep your foot on the thigh, try to keep your foot
on the left leg wherever you feel comfortable and maintain balance. But
remember your right toe should point down wards. Your body balance should
depend on the left leg.

-Join your palms and bring them to the middle of your chest and keep the figure
pointing upwards. Slowly move your hands overhead. Raise your arms over your
head. Your arms should be slightly bent.

-Stand straight, look in front and try to be relaxed.

-Stay in this position for about 10 seconds. Breathe normally.

-Slowly bring your hands in the middle portion of the chest same as before,
bring your right leg to the ground and come back in the starting position.
-Repeat the same procedure with the other leg.

-Try to repeat the whole procedure two to three times.

Dhanurasana (Bow pose)

Benefit:

Improves the functioning of pancreas and intestines. Thus helps in controlling
blood sugar levels. Organs like liver, pancreas, and enzyme producing organs
will function actively by practicing this asana.

Method:

-Lie on your stomach with your feet hip width apart and your arms by the side
of your body.

-Fold your knees and hold your ankles.

-Breathing in, lift your chest off the ground and pull your legs up and back.

-Look straight ahead with a smile on your face. Curve your lips to match the
curve of your body.

-Keep the pose stable while paying attention to your breath. Your body is now
taut as a bow.

-Continue to take long deep breaths as you relax in this pose. But don't get
carried away. Do not overdo the stretch.

-After 15 -20 seconds, as you exhale, gently bring your legs and chest back to
the ground.

-Release the ankles and relax.

Halasana (Plough Pose)

Benefit:

It stimulates the pancreas, spleen and activates immune system by massaging all
the internal organs including pancreas. It improves kidney and liver
functioning and strengthens the abdominal muscles. It also rejuvenates the
mind.

Method:

-Lie on your back with your arms beside you, palms downwards.

-As you inhale, use your abdominal muscles to lift your feet off the floor,
raising your legs vertically at a 90-degree angle. Continue to breathe normally
and supporting your hips and back with your hands, lift them off the ground.

-Allow your legs to sweep in a 180-degree angle over your head till your toes
touch the floor.

-Your back should be perpendicular to the floor. This may be difficult
initially, but make an attempt for a few seconds.

-Hold this pose and let your body relax more and more with each steady breath.5
After about a minute (a few seconds for beginners) of resting in this pose, you
may gently bring your legs down on exhalation. -Avoid jerking your body, while
bringing the legs down.

Ardha Matsyendrasana (Half Twist Pose)

Benefits:

This asana massages the kidneys, pancreas, small intestines, gall bladder and
liver, helping to stimulate digestion and squeeze out toxins. Useful for
diabetics, with concentration on the pancreas.Increases the elasticity of the
spine, tones the spinal nerves.

Method

-Sit on the carpet, stretch the legs straight.

-Fold the right leg. Keep the right leg's heel touching the left leg's knee.

-Take the right hand to back of the waist twisting your trunk, spread palms
inside and place it on the carpet.

-Bring the left hand close to right knee and hold the right leg's ankle or big
toe with the left hand.

-Twist the head and shoulder to right side and look straight to the right
shoulder's side (i.e back side).

Loktak Lake Manipur Loktak湖マニプール Локтак Manipur Loktak Lago Manipur ...

The World’s Only Floating National
Park Is Located in India. And It Is Amazing.
Imagine standing on a piece of land that floats on water. No, not
for some fictitious narration or a movie scene, but in real life – this is
something that’s actually possible in Manipur.

Welcome to Loktak Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Northeast
India. This iconic lake, located in Bishnupur district, at a distance of 53 km
from Imphal, is known for its circular floating swamps (called phumdis in the local language).

The term phumdis refers to a collection of
heterogeneous mass of vegetation, soil, and organic matter at various stages of
decomposition. Resembling miniature islands, these phumdis are found in various forms, floating
on the lake.
Covering an area of 300 square metres, the lake is a lifeline
for many people. It serves as a source of water for hydropower generation,
irrigation and drinking water supply in the region, other than being the source
of income for many fishermen who largely depend on it. Children of the fishermen
can even be seen playing and running around on these phumdis.

“Loktak is our mother.
Since time immemorial, the lake has been feeding the people of Manipur and
nourishing us”, a fisherwoman told The
Northeast Today.
The Sendra Tourist Home, located on a large phumdi island, also makes for an ideal
tourist spot.
The lake is home to 233 species of aquatic plants, more than 100
species of birds, and 425 species of animals, including the Indian python and
sambhar.
What makes the Loktak Lake even more special is the Keibul
Lamjao National Park located at the south western part of the lake. It is the
world’s only floating national park and is home to the endangered Manipuri
brow-antlered deer, Sangai.

Sangai is the state animal of Manipur. Its hooves are adapted to
walk on the phumdis.

This park, which was initially declared as a Sanctuary in 1966,
was subsequently declared a National Park in 1977.

Loktak is a birder’s paradise. The most commonly sighted
birds in the region include black kite, northern hill myna, East Himalayan pied
kingfisher, lesser skylark, lesser eastern jungle crow, Burmese pied myna, and
more.
The lake is now endangered, with innumerable threats like
pollution, decline in diversity of avifauna and thinning of phumdis.  All this, in turn,
threatens the Sangai deer. Phum
Shang
, an investigative documentary directed by Hao Bam Pabankumar,
which examines the serious environmental concerns facing Loktak Lake, won the
Golden Conch award for Best Documentary in the Mumbai International Film
Festival recently.

Top Beauties of this Planet!この惑星のトップ美女! قمة الجمال من هذا الكوكب ! Лучши...

Beauty is not skin deep

Think of a Disney princess, any Disney princess.
Picture her in your mind. Chances are she’s physically beautiful. On the
outside, Disney princesses look flawless, but it’s their kindness, outlook and
personality, among other traits, that make them so attractive to children and
adults alike.
Being physically attractive does not automatically
make someone beautiful. Inner beauty counts more than people seem to realize.
In today’s society though, inner beauty seems to be riding shotgun to outward
beauty. Physical beauty has power in today’s world, and people judge others and
formulate opinions without even getting to know them.
We live in a world where people are judged based on
the color of their skin, their religion and their weight, just to name a few.
Apparently, to some people’s standards, white people are the prettiest and the
smartest, all Muslims are terrorists and skinnier people are aesthetically
better than those who are heavier.
If we keep this up and keep judging people just
based on their outward attractiveness, then we are not only hurting people by
making them feel less confident in themselves but we are also strengthening the
societal belief that beauty is something that is only seen on the outside.
We have been told since elementary school that when
we pick up a book, we shouldn’t judge it by its cover because what’s inside is
what really should matter to the reader. Isn’t this the same idea?
I believe that who you are as a person is more
important than how you look. Everyone has some type of beauty attached to them,
but physical attractiveness isn’t the only kind of splendor in the world.
People are most beautiful when they have a story to
share, when they have a talent that makes them unique, when they have ideas
they are passionate about and want to express and when they have values and
long-term goals that they plan to work hard for.
Being physically beautiful isn’t a bad thing, but
it’s not everything. This is an idea that society can’t seem to grab hold of
and enforce. Instead of trying to convince people that being beautiful is
possible only with a pretty face, flat stomach and long legs, we should be
encouraging the idea that everyone is beautiful because everyone is unique.
The Trojan horse was something that everybody
believed to be grand and beautiful because that’s how it looked on the outside,
but its true power really came from within. I think that’s how it is with
people as well. Outward appearance does matter and does hold power, but true
beauty and true strength come from within.
College is the time when we’re finally free to
become truly independent and start a new chapter of our lives. Some of us may
have come from high schools and hometowns that had a specific definition of
what beauty is and pressured us to fit into a certain profile to be “popular”
or “cool.” During our time at college, whether we are freshmen or seniors, we
are all trying to find ourselves. Our pasts and perspectives on what beauty is
can control our actions and affect how we look and act in order to fit in more
and make new friends.
But, as cliché as it sounds, our true friends will
like us for who we are as people and not just because of how we look. Believing
that we are beautiful as growing individuals will allow us to make the best
memories in college and gain the confidence we need to set ourselves up for a
bright future.
Katherine Schwarzenegger is an American author and
the daughter of actor and politician Arnold Schwarzenegger. She once said,
“Learning to love my inner and outer beauty wasn’t an easy road. I still don’t
always love the reflection I see in the mirror, but I have learned that my
outer appearance does not define me.”
Outward appearance is not everything.
Unfortunately, society isn’t going to just wake up one day and decide that. To
make a difference and to be seen by today’s world as truly beautiful, we have
to show them that we believe we are, inside and out.

being used to treat a variety of health disorders.
Is there better proof of music therapy than a
lullaby that puts a child to sleep? Music appreciation begins right in the
womb, with the foetus listening to the mother's heartbeat and her choice of
music. It has been proved that after birth, the child shows an inclination to
listen to what it heard as a foetus.
A small time musician and organiser of music
sabhas, veteran Ananda Mohan vouches he falls sleep when he sets electronic
tambura in low volume and comfortable shruti. “This replaces sedatives
prescribed by doctor,” he says.
Indian music therapy is an integration of ancient
healing practices and musical traditions coupled with modifications derived by
current clinical practices. ‘Music Therapy' is a commonly heard phrase though
not much in vogue in India. This idea was popularised in south by Mangalampalli
Balamuralikrishna. He even put in effect some effort in this direction.
Spiritual guru Ganapathi Satchidananda of Mysore is an active practitioner of
music therapy with the help of some reputed musicians of the south. Of course
he adds a pinch of spiritualism and calls it ‘Naada Chikitsa'. Raga
Chikistsa
was the original Sanskrit treatise that dealt with curative
ragas with mood-enhancing characteristics, used in clinical application.
Vedic lore says ‘Samaveda' paved the way for music.
Perfect chant with apt stress on each syllable of ‘Mantra' emanates its own
power. Experiments with sound and its effects proved that the ‘Omkara' Nadam in
a particular frequency sounds as though lifting mortal soul to celestial
heights. And sound beyond certain decibels can send some to psychiatric care.
Some Indian ragas when sung well said to have caused rains, eased disturbed
persons, and even led to crops and cattle giving a better yield. Apparently
some ragas are earmarked for the nine emotions or Navarasas. Some ragas, claim
musicians, have healing effects as these nine emotions rule our body and mind.
Across the world, physicians, surgeons,
psychiatrists, psychologists are seeking the help of music therapists for
better results. Music therapy is now an established health profession. In this
system the doctor first assesses the needs of the patient. A qualified music
therapist indicates what choice of raga and tala and whether it is vocal or
instrumental music that suits the patient. While instruments provide a
continuous melodic pleasure, vocal music adds a pinch of spiritual element
through the lyrical content.
A serious music therapy session too requires case study to first assess
whether this medium of therapy can be extended to improve motor and emotional
skills for effective treatment. Music is more suited for palliative care and
hence should always be combined with traditional treatment.
